Il est né, le Divin Enfant

I once saw a music video by the group Siouxsie and the Banshees performing the French Christmas Carol Il est né, le Divin Enfant. Seriously. There they were in all their punk/goth glory, tenderly singing about God the Word taking flesh and being born among us. Once I got over the shock of it, I realized, why not? Did He not come to redeem Siouxsie Sioux and her bandmates just as much as He came to redeem Simon Peter or Gregory the Great or Catherine of Siena? And why should they not in turn offer Him praise (regardless of motive, that is exactly what happened, for God was praised among those who normally would never have opportunity or seek out the opportunity to hear His praises).

Herein lies the mystery. The eternal Word at the will of the Father and by the overshadowing of the Spirit took flesh within the Virgin Mary and became one of us His creatures. One of us, a mixed up, odd, broken, misguided, and adrift species created for one thing but aiming completely for another. He became one of us, but without sin, so that when He suffered and died He would break the pattern of corruption for human beings and deliver us back to our rightful place with God, of which we were robbed so long ago.

Everyone of us should be so moved to sing the praises of Him. He is born, the Divine Child.
